The DaPonte String Quartet performs two contrasting works of beginnings and endings.
- Franz Schubert: String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810 (“Death and the Maiden”)
- Reinaldo Moya: “Chapter One”
Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, a pillar of the string quartet repertoire, is based upon Claudius’ poem of a maiden pleading with Death to pass her by. A Memento Mori written with Schubert’s consciousness of his own impending end.
Written during the pandemic and upon the birth of his child, Moya’s Chapter One is a series of five vignettes infused with Latin rhythms referencing literary genres. Described by the composer as “jokes with different set-ups, but yet they arrive at the same punch line.”
