The DSQ will play and talk informally about such things as rehearsal technique, score analysis, and phrasing choices, demonstrating with excerptsfrom their upcoming concert series. The audience will be invited to ask questions on the topics discussed. The group will present passages from Mozart's Quartet in B♭ Major, OttorinoRespighi's String Quartet in D Major, and Beethoven's String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2. This group of works has been titled "Inside Job." Respighi has always been one of Dino Liva's favorites, and this will be a first performance of this work. The Beethoven and Mozart pieces are seemingly performed less frequently than these composers' other quartets, and it has been quite some time since DaPonte has brought them out.

Funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts; and by grants from the Quimby Family Foundation, the Davis Family Foundation, and the Maine Humanities Council.

program notes...
Using excerpts from the Second Quartet, the Daponte will show how Prokofiev creates musical communication without words, through the use of tone-painting and musical quotations, about life in the Kabardino-Balkar region of the Caucasus mountains where he and other artists lived during their WWII evacuation from Moscow. The work's first movement is a stirring march based on a rising four-note motif that is enriched by Prokofiev's vivid impressions of life in the Caucasus, especially a euphoric love-song and a rich gallery of pictures, including both erotic dance and the alpen-horn calls of sheep-herders.

In 2001 Franco Zeffirelli chose her for Amneris in his production of Aida, presented in Busseto on the centenary of Verdi's death and subsequently seen in Modena, Rome, Naples, Florence, Milan, Piacenza, and Ravenna. Since then Kate Aldrich has appeared in opera houses around the world, including with the Los Angeles Opera in the world première of Deborah Drattel's Nicholas and Alexandra under Mstislav Rostropovich and as Idamante (Idomeneo). She has been a guest artist with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the Teatro Regio in Turin, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Hamburg Staatsoper, the New York City Opera, and in Montreal. As winner of the Vidda Award she was presented by the OONY in a solo recital in Weill Recital Hall in 2006. During the 2006/07 season Kate Aldrich sang her first Sesto (La clemenza di Tito) in the Prague National Theater and made her San Francisco Opera début as Carmen and sang Maddalena (Rigoletto) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In Lisbon she sang her first Isabella in L'Italiana in Algeri, in Montpellier she was heard in Eine florentinische Tragödie by Zemlinsky, and in Tokyo as Dulcinée.

Millay Arts and Poetry Festival: "Vincent"
The DSQ is collaborating on music and will perform as both musicians and actors in the premier of "Vincent," by Rockland playwright Alva Hascall. The piece is an imagining of what the last hour of Vincent's life might have been. The Quartet are onstage presences throughout the performance, lending energy as well as musical underscoring to the memory laden and emotional journey of Vincent's last hour. One (Lydia Forbes) has an acting part as well. They will perform music by Erwin Schulhoff (String Quartet 1-iv), Claude Debussy (String Quartet in G minor, Scherzo), Astor Piazzolla (Four for Tango), Richard Strauss (Don Quizote Variations), and Thomas Adès (O Albion).

Millay Arts and Poetry Festival: "Poetry Concert"
For the visual arts enthusiasts, this "poetry concert" has the DSQ providing an antiphonal musical response to actress Sarah MacDonnell's reading of Edna St. Vincent Millay's words and poems. Harbor Square Gallery is a repurposed historic building, a truly lovely environment to experience music, art, and poetry. An exhibit of Millay-inspired works in multiple media will be on display and In Good Company will cater a reception in the Muir Garden for Contemporary Sculpture following the concert. This concert requires a separate ticket from the general festival pass, as it is a benefit concert for Millay House Rockland.

program notes...
Dubbed the "Pitch Doctor" by Igor Stravinsky, multifaceted musician John Heiss celebrates his 50th year as faculty at NEC.
Appointed to the NEC faculty during the school's 100th anniversary in 1967, Heiss' 50th year at the school is celebrated with performances by students, faculty, alumni and even family. In addition to his own works being performed on this occasion, works by three of his most influential composers will also be performed. The program also includes the world premiere of "Four Plus Four Short Pieces," which combines four more short pieces written this year to the Four Short Pieces written over 50 years ago in 1961.
As faculty for flute, chamber music, composition, music history and music theory, as well as the Director of NEC's Contemporary Ensemble, John Heiss has been one of the most influential teachers for the last 50 years.

program notes...
Join the DSQ as they give an open rehearsal of Béla Bartók's Third Quartet. Get an intimate look at how a quartet—which, unlike an orchestra, has no leader—determines how to approach a new work. This piece promises to be especially interesting, as the DSQ have a unique relationship with Bartok, having had close ties to musicians who worked with the composer during his lifetime.
